BERGKAMEN ROMAN PARK

In the Bergkamen city district of Oberaden, the largest Roman fort north of the Alps up to that time operated from 11 to 8/7 B.C.E. Up to two legions, around 12,000 people, were housed at this 56-ha fort. It was the largest military fort in Germania, and was home to 12,000-15,000 Roman soldiers in 11 B.C.E.

The best place to start and dive into Roman life in Bergkamen is the city museum's Roman section. Then follow up with the archaeological learning path to the excavation site of the Oberaden Roman fort and be amazed by a reconstructed section of the wood-and-earth wall.
