Bergkamen City Museum
The founding of the Bergkamen City Museum is closely associated with the excavation of the fort in Bergkamen-Oberaden. History comes alive with the finds displayed in the museum, tours of the Roman fort, and the active Roman group “Classis Augusta Drusiana”. Since spring of 2005, an archaeological learning path through the Oberaden Roman fort site has added to the attraction.
Besides Roman history, the museum has exhibits on the history of industry, settlement and the city, the life of peasant farmers and miners, culture in the 1950s, historical business equipment (hair salon, mom & pop store, pharmacy), a historic classroom as well as the Barbara adit, in which the mining history of Bergkamen is depicted. Special, temporary cultural-historical exhibits come frequently. The museum's educational offerings are also in high demand.
The museum is also home to a café as well as the city gallery “sohle 1”, which exhibits contemporary artists primarily from German-speaking countries.
