Bergkamen: a great place to be
Founded in 1966 by the merging of 6 smaller communities, Bergkamen is still a young city, located at the north-eastern part of the Ruhr Area. Surrounded by the large cities Dortmund and Hamm, the former mining region is now at the process of structural change. Nevertheless, the town offers a number of outstanding leisure activities as well as cultural highlights!

Although Bergkamen was founded only about 40 years ago, the town's history reaches back to ancient Roman times - documented by the Municipal Museum that displays valuable ancient finds and carries out interesting projects to give visitors a lively insight into these bygone days.
Another extraordinary attraction is the well-known Westphalian Sports Boat Centre - Marina Rünthe, situated right at the Datteln-Hamm Canal. Watersports enthusiasts and visitors find equally pleasant conditions here and are welcome to enjoy a charming maritime atmosphere together with a variety of gastronomical delights.
Apart from that, cultural highlights such as theatres and art galleries don't come off badly in Bergkamen. A large audience frequently visits the "studio theater" and the art gallery "sohle 1" which offer inspiring performances and exhibitions. Besides, Bergkamen is a lively town whose many cultural events such as the Harbour Festival, the Light Market and the newly installed End of Holidays Party attract visitors from all over the region.

Westphalian Sports Boat Centre - Marina Rünthe
In former times, the port reflected the dirt and dust of the coal mining industry - now it's a modern Sports Boat Centre full of Mediterranean flair and a relaxing atmosphere! 35.000 m² of water area and 310 moorings invite skippers and visitors to rest at this maritime attraction situated where Ruhr Area and Münsterland meet.

The beautiful promenade offers visitors a wonderful view of the boats in the marina. Apart from that, footpaths and cycle tracks, water sports facilities and a fitness centre attract sports enthusiasts from all over the region. The nearby nature reserve 'Beversee' provides strollers with attractive footpaths in the middle of a beautiful countryside. On top, the 'Santa Monika III' and 'MS Hildegard' excursion boats take passengers from Rünthe Marina on round-trip excursions on the Datteln-Hamm Canal. Boats can be loan from several charter firms to explore the Ruhr Area sports boat region and boat driving license schools offer compact courses for anyone who wants to obtain a boat license.
Skippers find modern summer as well as winter moorings suitable for the disabled with a slip construction, a crane, a petrol station, modern sanitation facilities and local firms offering boat repairs.

Delicious dishes - from Chinese-Mongolian to home-style - are served in a stylish setting at the 'Am Yachthafen' restaurant, the 'Achterdeck' floating bistro, the restaurant 'Gate to Asia' and the 'Neumann's Nautilus Hotel & Restaurant', the latter also offering 13 single and double rooms all year round. Additionally, the marina has been constantly extended during the last years and in 2007 vacation apartments and camper van parking spaces were newly set up.

Bergkamen surrounded by nature -
The nature reserves 'Beversee' and 'Lippeaue' and the mining tip 'Großes Holz'
Nature enthusiasts will love the varied flora and fauna of the popular destinations 'Lippeaue', 'Beversee' and 'Großes Holz', all three offering attractive footpaths, cycle tracks and pleasant sites for picnic. Whereas the 'Lippeaue' is famous for its diverse bird fauna and the partially restored Lippe River, the redesigned and greened over Großes Holz mining tip entraces people with a beautiful view reaching far into the Münsterland or the City of Hamm. In winter you may even spot some snow-covered Sauerland peaks and if the weather's fine you can see the high-rising Dortmund television tower.

The coal mining era had an impact even on the natural areas in Bergkamen, the 'Beversee' being created as a consequence of subsidence of ground and 'Großes Holz' being a former slug heap covered with greenery. Nowadays, the coal mining history of these natural hot spots is surmisable at best and they are equally popular local holiday areas for families, senior citizens and sport enthusiasts.
Be fascinated by the beautiful panorama combining industrial culture and natural highlights and follow the 'Route der Industriekultur' (Route of Industrial Culture) at 'Großes Holz' or the 'Route Industrienatur' (Route of Industrial Nature) at the 'Beversee'!
Bergkamen Municipal Museum
56 ha of an ancient Roman fortress right in Bergkamen - the largest one north of the Alps! Between the 11th and 8th century B.C. two legions and probably around 12.000 Roman soldiers were stationed here. The Bergkamen Municipal Museum displays a wide range of ancient finds, including for example weapons, medals, cutlery and games, all related to the nearby archaeological excavation. Attractions like the archaeological education trail and 'Culinaria Romana - how the Romans ate and drank' provide a lively insight into this part of the town's history. After being dressed in traditional Roman togas and being taken on a tour through the Roman exhibition, the Culinaria Romana participants will then have the opportunity to prepare several Roman delicacies and enjoy a three-course meal in a cosy atmosphere.

Besides the Roman exhibition, the Municipal Museum also houses numerous other exhibitions dealing with industrial, settlement and town history, former homes of farmers and miners, the style of home furnishing of the 1950s, club history and a fully furnished corner shop of the 1920s. Temporary historico-cultural special exhibitions are also organized on a regular basis.
Sohle 1, an art gallery exhibiting works of contemporary artists - most of them from German-speaking countries - is also housed in the Municipal Museum and attracts vivitors from all over the region. The museum café provides art lovers with refreshments and little delicacies.

Ecological Centre
Visitors interested in nature conservation should make their way to the Ecological Centre (Ökologiestation), located in Bergkamen-Heil at a former manor called 'Schulze-Heil'. Presentations show how to deal with nature considerately and the numerous events and thematically guided tours give people a lively insight into environmental protection.
Apart from participating in educational offers, visitors can also go on a bee nature trail, examine a vegetable garden, an educational pond, plant sewage works and many more. After a walk round the terrain, you can visit the charming gable shop offering local products such as honey, jelly and apple juice.

Harbour Festival
The annual harbour festival attracts approximately 60.000 visitors every year, being one of the highlights for water and water sports enthusiasts throughout the region.

Diving performances, water ski shows, music, the "Drachenbootrennen" (a fun cup for amateur teams), sailing , the 'Flying Dutchman' ... just to name a few of the Harbour Festival's attractions. Watch how creatively self-designed 'boats' compete with each other to win the 'Flying Dutchman' cup or just relax and watch the inspiring stage-show.
Our smaller guests will love the 'Titanic-Slide', the 'Bungee Trampoline' and numerous other attractions such as children's theatre and face-painting.

End of Holidays Party
For many schoolchildren the end of the summer holidays is associated with the end of getting up late in the morning, being outside with friends all day and the soon beginning of the cold season - but the newly installed End of Holidays Party in Bergkamen makes this time of year an exceptional event for about 50.700 schoolchildren of the District of Unna!
Apart from children's attractions on and off stage such as a boucing castle, face-painting, clownery and many more, the End of Holidays Party is also a great event for the 'grown-ups'. Many bike enthusiasts take the opportunity of participating in the bike rally and come together from many nearby cities such as Bönen, Fröndenberg/Ruhr, Hamm, Holzwickede, Kamen, Lünen, Schwerte, Selm, Unna, Werne - and all districts of Bergkamen, of course! After the bike rally, visitors can relax and enjoy hot live music and a raffle with exciting prizes.The next End of Holidays Party will take place on 28 August 2010.

It's autumn again! Days get shorter, temperatures lower - and in Bergkamen fabulous shining lights wander though the streets! The annual Festival of Lights is one of the highlights of the year attracting street artists from all over the world who enchant the audience with fantastic costumes and sensational performances.

You are interested in going on a bike tour? 92 km of cycle tracks and footpaths go through Bergkamen, inviting visitors to go on extended trips throughout the region. The following cycle tracks directly lead through Bergkamen:
Roman Route
315 km from Xanten to Detmold on the trail of the Romans - this route offers a fascinating insight into ancient times. The Roman army camp and the ancient finds exhibited at the Bergkamen Municipal Museum are one of the highlights of the our attracting many interested cyclists every year. Apart from this, Xanten with its reconstructed buildings of 'Colonia Ulpia Traiana', the Westphalian Roman Museum in Haltern and finally the 'Hermannsdenkmal' (monument of Hermann the Cheruscan) are interesting stops of the Roman Route.
Get the free information brochure on the Roman Route (in German) at the Bergkamen City Coucil, Department Economical Development and City Marketing, or surf the web on www.roemerroute.de (in German). The symbol of a Roman helmet and red (direction from Detmold to Xanten) and green arrows (direction from Xanten to Detmold) will show the way.
Emscher Park Cycle Track and Ruhr Area Cycle Track
The Emscher Park Cycle Track is a 280 km route, the Ruhr Area cycle track 300 km and both go directly through the Ruhr Area. Enjoy a trip round the former coal mining region on two lovingly arranged cycle tracks and be inspired by the bygone times of pits and coal mines.
Horticultural Show Route (LandesGartenSchau-Route)
The 140 km route from Lünen to Paderborn connects five parks of former Northrhine-Westphalian horticultual shows such as Lünen (Seepark, show in 1996),
Hamm (Maximilianpark, show in 1984), Rheda-Wiedenbrück (Flora Westfalica, show in 1988), Paderborn (Castle and Meadow Park 'Schloss Neuhaus', show in 1994) and Oelde (Vier-Jahreszeiten-Park, show in 2001) together with the site of the horticultural show 2008.
